Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is an academic/teaching health authority, with three major research and teaching hospital campuses: Vancouver General Hospital, UBC Hospital, and GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre. Research also takes place at Lion's Gate Hospital, Richmond Hospital and within Community Health Centres. Our academic partner is the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine.
Health research is an important part of developing better health outcomes. Clinical research helps us answer questions about health and the medical care we provide. It helps researchers develop new approaches to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease, and it helps health care providers determine which approaches are best suited for which patients. Clinical research often involves clinical trials - research studies in human volunteers designed to answer specific questions. Some clinical trials may involve testing experimental treatments in patients, while others may simply involve observing patients or collecting samples to study further in a laboratory.
VCH initiates approximately 500 new research studies every year, some of which are posted within this site.
All research conducted at Vancouver Coastal Health is reviewed and approved by a sanctioned University of British Columbia Research Ethics Board or an ethics board of an affiliate institution.
