NIH Elimination of Error Correction Window from eSubmission process:
What is happening? The "error correction window" is being removed from the electronic submission process for submission deadlines on or after January 25, 2011. The error correction window is the 2 days after the submission deadline in the e-submission process that NIH has given applicants to address NIH system-identified errors/warnings.
What is NOT changing:
NIH continues to provide a two-day viewing window to allow applicants to look at the assembled applications in the eRA Commons following submission.
NIH will continue to make accommodations for issues with Federal systems that threaten on-time submission of individual applications, provided that they are properly documented and verified by NIH staff.
NIH will continue to provide flexibility as needed for widespread issues and/or natural disasters.
Messages for applicants:
Applicants should SUBMIT EARLY to allow time to make any necessary corrections and view the application before the submission deadline.
NIH has many resources available to help applicants avoid common errors and ensure successful submission.

Canadian Researchers Testing Unique Vaccines for Prion Diseases and Common Cancers:
A research team led by Dr. Neil Cashman, Scientific Director of PrioNet Canada (a national Network of Centres of Excellence, hosted by VCHRI and UBC), and neurologist at VGH, is currently working on groundbreaking research that will enable the development of innovative, safe and effective vaccines and immunotherapies for the treatment of prion disease, chronic wasting disease (CWD) and cancer.
Dr. Cashman's team discovered the prion protein not only mutated in prion disease but also, serendipitously, discovered similar mutations on certain human cancer cells, making the misfolded protein a promising focus for treating common types of cancer. This discovery is a significant move forward for the prion field, demonstrating that prion protein plays a greater role in other diseases.
VCH researchers awarded $2.5M to advance knowledge in physical activity and hip osteoarthritis:
A research team based at the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility at VGH and the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada (located at VGH) has been awarded $2.5 million from CIHR to investigate whether certain types physical activity cause hip osteoarthritis (OA). The researchers, led by Dr. John Esdaile, Scientific Director for the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada, will use advanced imaging via Canada's first open- MRI dedicated to research to better understand FAI and subsequent osteoarthritis. The team will also work with BC's First Nations and Chinese communities in the study. It is believed that First Nations communities have higher incidence of FAI, while Chinese communities have lower.
The funding was announced Monday by the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, at VGH. For more information on the announcement, click here.
Announcing the 2011 VCHRI Clinician Scientist Awards competition:

VCHRI Human Research Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs):
VCHRI is pleased to provide its researchers and their research team members with access to a set of Institutional Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the conduct of research involving human subjects. Institutional SOPs will help ensure the protection of human subjects participating in research, and promote consistency in the conduct of research across Vancouver Coastal Health.
As a member of the Network of Networks (N2), VCHRI was provided with access to SOPs developed by N2. The N2 SOPs were developed to be a national standardized set of operating procedures applicable to any therapeutic area. For additional information on N2, please visit their website at: www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/34795.html
Prior to adopting, and distributing the N2 SOPs to VCHRI's research community, VCHRI formed an SOP committee to conduct a review. The VCHRI SOP Committee recommended that changes be made to ensure that the SOPs were consistent with VCH and UBC research policies; and second, to ensure that from the researchers' and research coordinators' perspectives, the SOPs were accurate and reflected our actual processes.
Although the format of the VCHRI SOPs is similar to that of the N2 SOPs, the content is not the same.
How to Access the VCHRI SOPs To access the VCHRI SOPs, please email Stephania Manusha, Regional Manager, Clinical Trials Administration, VCH at: . VCHRI researchers and their study team members will be provided with the login and password via email. Only VCHRI researchers and their research team members may access the VCHRI SOPs.
An introduction to the new VCHRI human research SOPs for research managers, coordinators and assistants. Information will be provided on how the SOPs were developed, how N2 fits in, who the SOPs apply to, who the VCHRI SOP Committee is, how feedback from the VCHRI community will be incorporated, and future plans for education/training on the VCHRI SOPs.

CIHR New Procedure for reviewing/funding Large Grants
(From Pierre Chartrand, Chief Scientific Officer, CIHR)
RCTs have now been fully integrated into the Operating Grant competition. To establish stable funding for both RCTs (which can require up to $5M) and operating grants (which average $500K-700), CIHR's Scientific Council has approved a new procedure for funding large grants in the Open Operating Grants competitions.
Beginning in fall 2010, a specific funding pool will be established for all large grants, including RCTs. Large grants will be defined as "those in the 98th percentile of all grant amounts in any given competition". The funding pool for large grants will be ~$12.5 million per competition or $25 million per fiscal year.
All applications will continue to be reviewed by their respective peer review committees.
