Standing room only at Research Week event

Submitted by Ingrid Sochting, Assistant Director of Vancouver Coastal Health's Research Institute, Richmond Health Services

More than 250 people filled the auditorium at Richmond Hospital on Wednesday evening to hear about the latest research on brain health and how to reduce the risk of brain problems.

Dr. Max Cynader, Director of the Brain Research Centre at UBC Hospital was the keynote speaker. Panel members were: Dr. David Cohen, a geriatric psychiatrist at Richmond Health Services; Angela Johnston of the Alzheimer's Society; and Eva Busich-Veloso, co-ordinator of seniors services for the City of Richmond.

Topics covered included: the latest brain research: what happens to your brain when it ages, what are some of the biggest diseases that affect the aging brain, what researchers are learning about new treatments, and things that people can do to reduce the risk of brain problems later in life.

Prior to the forum, there were displays and a demonstration of the new Dementia Journey web site, a provincial tool that presents information about dementia through stories that reflect different stages in the journey with dementia. It also provides links to regionally specific services and resources.

Feedback from those who attended the event has been glowing. Here's a sampling:

  • "Dr. Cynader is an excellent speaker"
  • "amazing source of information"
  • "hope that such forums will be held again in our community"
  • "thank you for putting on this forum"

The public lecture was held this year for the first time as part of the Research Week, celebrated for the past three years in Richmond Health Services.

Another component of the annual event is the display of research posters in the hospital atrium during the entire week. Following are this year's submissions which will remain up until end of day today (Friday):

  • Dieticians in Primary Health Care
  • The Patient-Centred Interview and International Graduates: A Preliminary View
  • Early Feeding After Total Abdominal Hysterectomy
  • An Action Research Cycle to Organization: How do I as a leader infuse health promotion principles into public health nursing practice
  • House Calls and International Medical Graduates
