      1. Annual VCHRI Summer Student Research Forum - August 25th
        Are you supervising a summer research student? Let them know that VCHRI is hosting a Summer Research Student Forum on August 25th. All undergraduate, co-op and medical students who are conducting a summer research project in a VCHRI-affiliated research group, are invited to present their work.

        Full event details, including required forms, can be found here. Prizes, in the form of UBC Bookstore gift cards, to be had.

        The participants' colleagues (fellows and grad students) are invited to attend all or part of the event. (For catering purposes, please notify Shelly Reinhart () by Monday, August 22nd if you plan to attend.)

      2. How to Survive and Thrive as a UBC Postdoc
        Presented by the UBC Postdoctoral Fellows Office and Postdoctoral Fellow Association

        If you are a UBC Postdoctoral Fellow who has not yet attended a Postdoctoral Orientation session presented by the UBC Postdoctoral Fellows Office (PDFO) & Postdoctoral Fellow Association (PDA) you are invited to register for our next Orientation event.

        The half-day session is aimed at newly arrived Postdoctoral Fellows. It provides a wealth of information on the academic and research landscape of UBC as well as the resources available to you as a Postdoc. Presentations on achieving career success are complimented by those sharing insights into Canadian culture and life in Vancouver. Even if you believe you already have a good understanding of UBC and life in Vancouver, attending the session will give you an opportunity to meet your fellow Postdocs and add to your personal and professional network.

      1. Funding Opportunities
        Burroughs Wellcome Fund: Career awards for medical scientists (Deadline October 1st)

        Bridges the transition from postdoctoral (or fellowship) training to independent investigator. Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease-oriented, or translational research. (Health services research and large-scale clinical trials are ineligible.)

        • Value:   $140,000 per year for 5 years.

        Awards are made to degree-granting institutions on behalf of the awardee, so contact the VPRO office, which coordinates the applications.

        Postdoctoral Fellowship opportunities from Canadian Institutes of Health Research

        1. Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program (DEADLINE: November 3rd)
          Administered by Canada's research granting councils -- the CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC
          • Value:   $70,000 per year (taxable) for two years.
          • Evaluation criteria include:
            • synergy between an applicant's individual merit and potential to launch a successful research-intensive career
            • the host institution's commitment to the applicant's research program and research environment. All applications must be completed in full collaboration with the proposed host institution.
          • Coordinating your application with UBC internal procedures. In 2010, the UBC Post Doctoral Fellows Office (PDFO) coordinated the process. Check here for information.

        2. CIHR Fellowship 2011-2012 (Deadline: October 3rd)
          Full details on Eligibility, Guidelines , Review Process and Evaluation, and "How to Apply", here.

          Deadlines:October 3rd, 2011 and February 1st, 2012
          Note:You may apply only once per year, from September 1st through August 31st. If you apply in October, you cannot apply in February.
          Amount:Maximum is $60,000 per annum for up to 5 years. Value and duration is related to degree held, licensure (where applicable), location of tenure and experience. Additional research allowance: $5,000 per annum.

          ADDITIONAL FUNDS are available, in more than 20 priority research areas. Check the complete list here. These funds support applications the just miss being funded through regular competition.

        3. Graduate Studentships: Canadian Institutes of Health Research
          1. The CIHR Doctoral Research Awards consist of two programs administered through a single application:
            • The Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral Awards, for students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field in Canada.
            • The Doctoral Foreign Study Award (DFSA), for students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field abroad.

            Deadlines:October 3rd, 2011 and February 1st, 2012
            Note:You may apply only once per year, from September 1st through August 31st. If you apply in October, you cannot apply in February.
            Amount:Maximum is $30,000 per annum
            Research allowance: $5,000 per annum.

          2. Vanier Fellowships Canada Graduate Scholarship
