Writing a Grant Proposal: Crafting a Compelling Research Story

Feb 3 2026, 12:00pm – 1:30pm
Virtual

In this workshop, led by the Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication at the University of British Columbia, participants will explore the fundamentals of writing effective research grant proposals that present a compelling narrative, articulate the research problem and demonstrate how the proposed work addresses it. Participants are encouraged to bring a writing sample to review and refine during the session.

Learning objectives

In this workshop you will:

  • Master the essentials of writing successful grant proposals.
  • Learn how to craft a compelling narrative that clearly defines the problem or opportunity your research will address.
  • Discover the guidance and resources offered by the Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication to support your grant-writing journey.
About the speaker
Dr. Xuan Zhang is a senior program manager at the Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication where she oversees the writing consultation service and designs academic writing programs for UBC students across the disciplines. Her work focuses on advancing academic language development across disciplines and supporting students in navigating the linguistic and rhetorical expectations of research writing. As a multilingual academic and applied linguist, Dr. Zhang brings both deep personal insight and research-based expertise to her work with graduate students and researchers.

This workshop is part of our VCHRI Research Training Series. This series is designed to support the acquisition of advanced skills, techniques and knowledge and lead to enhanced practices in the conduct of research.
