Purpose of Study
The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the Compensatory Cognitive Strategies Scale (CCSS) is effective for individuals with major psychiatric disorders who experience cognitive difficulties. The scale measures how frequently patients use strategies to compensate for cognitive challenges in daily life (for example, memory aids, electronic devices, etc.). No existing tool assesses this in psychiatric populations. This project aims to provide preliminary psychometric data on CCSS use in this group.
Participants will connect with the research coordinator to review the consent form and ask any clarifying questions. They will then receive a UBC REDCap link to digitally sign the consent form and complete a questionnaire. The questionnaire covers demographics, medical history, and scales assessing compensatory cognitive strategies, metamemory, self-reported cognitive functioning, depressive symptoms, and socially desirable responding.
Eligibility
This study is open to adults 19 years of age and above with a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or bipolar disorder from their treating clinician. Comorbid substance use history is permitted. Exclusion criteria includes major neurological disorders (for example, traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness lasting 10 minutes or more, stroke, dementia, etc.), limited English proficiency and substance use (including alcohol/cannabis) within six hours prior to participation.
Disclaimer
Study Coordinators and Research Nurses cannot give medical advice over the phone.
