Biography
Dr. David C. Evans is a trauma and general surgeon in the Department of Surgery at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He holds a BA from Princeton University and MD and CM degrees from McGill University, where he also completed his general surgery residency. Following critical care training at the University of Toronto and an M.Sc. in Epidemiology from UBC, Dr. Evans practiced community surgery before joining the McGill University Health Centre as trauma director at the Montreal General Hospital. Since 2005, he has been based at Vancouver General Hospital, where he serves as medical director for Trauma Services BC and has held leadership roles including site trauma director and regional medical trauma director for Vancouver Coastal Health.
Dr. Evans’s research aims to enhance the effectiveness of trauma systems, patient outcomes and care quality through evidence-based analysis. He has examined the history, development and design of trauma systems in Canada and internationally, with a focus on comparative evaluation of regional trauma systems. His work on trauma complication reporting has identified inconsistencies in registry documentation, highlighting the need for standardized measures. Clinically, he investigates regional differences in trauma mortality, the value of surgical interventions in abdominal trauma and factors influencing stroke risk after blunt cerebrovascular injury. These efforts contribute to advancing trauma care policy and practice at both the provincial and national levels.
