Biography
Dr. James Byrne is a trauma and acute care surgeon at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of British Columbia. He trained in general surgery at the University of Toronto, where he also completed a PhD in clinical epidemiology at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. He further specialized with fellowships in trauma surgery and surgical critical care at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and previously practiced as a trauma surgeon and surgical intensivist at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He joined the faculty at VGH in 2024.
Dr. Byrne's research focuses on enhancing the quality of trauma care and understanding how regional disparities and trauma system organization affect patient outcomes.
