Empowering Research: A Guide to UBC Faculty of Medicine's Data Management Platforms

In this session, speakers from the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (FoM) Digital Solutions Research Technology team will give a high-level overview of all the data management resources available for researchers at VCHRI. They will introduce platforms such as FoM REDcap for electronic data collection, OpenSpecimen for biobanking and Microsoft PowerBI for data visualization. Attendees will also learn about interesting use cases, from observational registries to research registries and everything in between, hosted on FoM data platforms.

Learning objectives 

In this workshop you will learn:

  • introduction to FoM research data platforms available to VCHRI researchers and their teams
  • overview of data management best practices related to FoM research data platforms
  • research data management support services available from the FoM data management team

This workshop is part of our VCHRI Research Training Series. This series is designed to support the acquisition of advanced skills, techniques and knowledge and lead to enhanced practices in the conduct of research.

About the speakers
Kenny Hammond has been working in medical education and research since 2009. In 2015, he began working with digital solutions and became manager of the research data services team in 2022. Kenny strives to engage with clients to find technological solutions to support their research needs. He has a Master in Public Health and a Graduate Diploma in Community Health, both from Memorial University.
Ashley McKerrow is an experienced data management professional with over 12 years of experience supporting health research. She began her career at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute where she built a successful team to support full research data services. Under her leadership, the data management team facilitated hundreds of active research studies and is recognized by peers as a standard for data management processes and documentation.
