Consent Matters: Building Ethical Research Practice Through Informed Choice

Join Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) ethicists Kim Jameson and Dr. Kris Smith for a practical workshop on applying research ethics in clinical research. This session will review relevant health care consent legislation and research ethics guidelines and demonstrate valid consent processes using real-world case studies. To prepare for the session, please review the following resources in advance:

Learning objectives 

In this workshop you will:

  • Review relevant legislation for health care consent, governance standards and best practices
  • Understand the core elements for valid consent in health research 
  • Explore consent templates and approaches to facilitate informed consent discussions 
  • Participate in case-based discussions using interactive scenarios to understand how consent works in practice
About the speakers
Kim Jameson is a lead ethicist with VCH. She holds a Master of Philosophy with specialization in applied ethics and is a PhD candidate at the University of British Columbia (UBC) W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics. As part of her portfolio, she supports the ethics education forum and is the co-Chair of the Regional Ethics Committee. Kim has also served as a volunteer ethicist with the UBC Clinical Research Ethics Board since 2011 and is a member of the Canadian Bioethics Society. 
Dr. Kris Smith is an ethicist with VCH and a postdoctoral fellow with the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health at the University of Victoria. In her clinical role, she leads ethics support for Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, providing consultation and moral care debriefs grounded in relational ethics. She supports clients, families, providers and leaders in making transparent, just and values-based decisions across lifespan. Her research focuses on ethics, health equity and palliative care.

This workshop is part of our VCHRI Research Training Series. This series is designed to support the acquisition of advanced skills, techniques and knowledge and lead to enhanced practices in the conduct of research.

Please note that registration for this session will be limited to 60 participants with priority given to VCH researchers, staff and trainees. Light refreshments will be provided.
