Cybersecurity Awareness for Researchers

In this workshop, Provincial Digital Health and Information Services Education Awareness Specialists, Joseph Tesoro and Anthony Song Lara, will share the key cybersecurity risks that arise when conducting research and provide strategies to minimize these risks. The session will cover both online and on-site cybersecurity risks, such as phishing, authentication, file sharing and device security, and will give actionable advice on how to engage in safe research and data handling in your work.

Learning objectives

In this workshop you will learn:

  • The importance of cybersecurity and why it matters
  • Key cybersecurity risks in research, including both online and on-site, environmental risks
  • Common habits and actions that may put systems and data at risk
  • Strategies to engage in safe research and data handling

About the speakers

Joseph Tesoro is an education awareness specialist who has served PHSA for over 12 years. A former clinician turned cybersecurity educator, he combines his passion for health care and safety to help staff protect patients, data and systems from digital threats. Joseph co-leads the provincial Cybersecurity Awareness Program for PHSA, VCH and PHC, supporting more than 75,000 employees. He’s known for making cybersecurity practical, relatable and empowering — because being informed is everyone’s best defense.
Anthony Song Lara is a cybersecurity awareness specialist who has been with PHSA for over two years, helping staff across B.C.’s health organizations understand technology in simple, human terms. He co-leads the Cybersecurity Awareness Program for PHSA, VCH and PHC. With a background rooted in education, Anthony bridges the gap between complex cybersecurity concepts and everyday practice. He’s passionate about creating a culture where every employee feels confident recognizing and stopping digital threats before they spread.
