The Science and Application of Wearable Technologies for Physical Activity

The UBC Physical Activity and Precision Health Research Cluster invites you to a presentation on how technology can help all of us stay active and healthy. Light refreshments will be provided.

Speakers include:

  • Professor Linda Li, PhD, PT, University of British Columbia
    Dr. Li’s research centers on improving care for people with arthritis and empowering patient self-management. Her work focuses on the integration of online, mobile, and wearable tools in health care. Examples include the use of interactive decision aids for improving communication between patients and health professionals, and the use of wearables and apps to personalized physical activity levels for patients. Dr. Li will present her talk entitled: Ethical Considerations in the use of Wearable Technology.
  • Professor Laurent Bouyer, PhD, Laval University
    Dr. Bouyer's research program focuses on motor control and motor learning. His research interests include remote sensing/telemetry in real-world environments, improving clinical tests using wearable sensors, and developing new robotic technologies and software for rehabilitation.Dr. Bouyer will present his talk entitled: Continuous Movement Monitoring with Wearable Sensors: Key Elements for Success.
  • Professor Reed Ferber, PhD, University of Calgary
    Dr. Ferber is the founder and director of the Running Injury Clinic and internationally recognized as a leading expert in biomechanics research using wearable technology for the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and disease. Currently, he leads a team of UCalgary researchers in the NSERC Wearable Technology Research and Collaboration (We-TRAC) CREATE Training Program to train the next generation of wearable technology experts. Dr. Bouyer will present his talk entitled: Dr. Ferber will present his talk entitled: How to use Wearable Sensor Data in a Meaningful Way.
