Improve your scientific figures by learning how figure design can affect readability, interpretation and impact. Explore the vital role of well-designed scientific figures in effectively communicating your research findings. Drawing upon examples from published literature, you will learn how to identify key audience and tailor your figures accordingly. This workshop is helpful for learners using any graphing or data analysis program.

This workshop is supported by the VCHRI Trainee Committee. Registration is required as space is limited, and VCHRI trainees will be prioritized. Your registration will be confirmed by VCHRI following submission.

Learning objectives

In this workshop you will learn:

  • new ways to make figures highlight your take-home message (e.g. avoiding perceptual judgements, customizing variable order)
  • formatting for function (e.g. how to best use color, axis labels/legends, scales, aspect ratio, negative space)
  • strategies for getting effective feedback

With a PhD in neuroscience and 25 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Sarah Treit combines a strong academic track record with a passion for communicating science through visuals. She provides consulting and education services to researchers at all career stages.
