Announcement Aug 4, 2026 3 minutes

Leadership update from UBC Faculty of Medicine and VCHRI.

We are pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Janice Eng and Dr. Teresa Liu-Ambrose as Co-Directors, Centre for Hip Health and Mobility (CHHM) for a second five-year term, effective to June 30, 2031.

Dr. Janice Eng is a professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Neurological Rehabilitation. Recognized internationally for her leadership in rehabilitation science, Dr. Eng’s research focuses on improving mobility, recovery and quality of life for individuals with neurological conditions such as stroke, as well as older adults with chronic health conditions. At CHHM, she leads multidisciplinary research on innovative rehabilitation interventions and technologies. Her work has influenced clinical practice globally, and she has received numerous honours for her contributions, including appointment as a University Killam Professor and as an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Dr. Teresa Liu-Ambrose is a professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Healthy Aging, internationally recognized for her leadership in aging, mobility and cognitive health research. Her work focuses on understanding how exercise and other lifestyle interventions can prevent cognitive decline and improve mobility in older adults, using rigorous clinical trials and neuroimaging methods. She directs the Vancouver General Hospital Falls Prevention Clinic and co-leads the Exercise Working Group of the Global Guidelines for Falls. Dr. Liu-Ambrose’s research has influenced clinical practice, community programs and international guidelines aimed at promoting healthy aging. She is a Canadian Academy of Health Sciences Fellow and a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists.

In their first term as Co-Directors, CHHM, Drs. Eng and Liu-Ambrose have helped position the Centre as an internationally recognized hub for healthy aging and rehabilitation research. Over the past five years, they have supported the Centre in advancing innovative, evidence-based interventions, helping to influence clinical practice, community programs and health policy in Canada and globally.

In their next term, Drs. Eng and Liu-Ambrose will lead the Centre in continuing to build its world-class reputation as a hub for innovative research, education and patient care. With support from two successful Canadian Foundation for Innovation grants, they will prioritize the development of a new research space with state-of-the-art equipment, helping to strengthen partnerships with Vancouver Coastal Health clinicians and their patients and advance CHHM’s mission of promoting mobility, recovery and healthy aging.

Please join us in congratulating Drs. Eng and Liu-Ambrose on their reappointment.

Sincerely,
