Biography
Dr. Philip Dawe is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of British Columbia. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree and completed his residency in Manitoba, followed by fellowships in trauma and acute care surgery, as well as leadership training at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). Since 2017, he has served as an acute care and trauma surgeon at VGH, and in 2021, he became medical director of the Trauma Program at VGH.
Dr. Dawe's research interests encompass resuscitation and transfusion in trauma, acute care surgery and rural surgical training, education and telementoring. His clinical research contributions include studies on guided blood transfusion in trauma patients, massive transfusion prediction using the Revised Assessment of Bleeding and Transfusion (RABT) score and the costs of unnecessary blood work. Most recently, he has focused on reducing rates of injury and re-injury in marginalized communities, particularly among individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use and/or mental health disorders. He is a co-investigator on the Breaking the Injury Cycle study, which examines the impact of social determinants of health on trauma care and injury recidivism, and the principal investigator on a study evaluating the in-hospital experience of major trauma patients at VGH.
