Biography
Dr. Emilie Joos is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a trauma and acute care surgeon at Vancouver General Hospital since 2014. She earned her medical degree at McGill University, completed a general surgery residency at Université Laval, and pursued a trauma and surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Southern California/Los Angeles County Hospital. She holds an MSc in Global Health Policy from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Joos is the associate medical director for the Branch for Global Surgical Care and founder of the UBC Global Surgery Lab. She has been working with Médecins Sans Frontières since 2015 and was deployed several times in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Joos’ research focuses on improving outcomes in trauma care locally and globally. In clinical care, she has made key contributions to the management of blunt cerebrovascular injuries as well as to the evaluation of antithrombotic therapies in trauma patients. She has led national studies to standardize follow-up imaging and care pathways and co-authored a systematic review examining hemorrhagic risks in patients with complex injuries. Dr. Joos has also explored surgical disparities in rural, remote and Indigenous populations. Together with the Global Surgery Lab, she leads capacity-building efforts in the development of global surgical education initiatives in the Central African Republic and South Sudan.
Dr. Joos is currently collaborating with the Ottawa Hospital on a clinical trial designed to evaluate whether anti-Xa guided dosing of low molecular weight heparin can reduce the incidence of venous thromboembolism in high-risk trauma patients. Additionally, she is leading a qualitative research project investigating the barriers and facilitators to accessing acute surgical care for Indigenous patients within Vancouver General Hospital’s Acute Care Surgery services.
