This is a general introduction to the important role statistics play in the planning stage of a research project. We will discuss the best practices for carrying out the crucial steps in the research process: specifying the scientific question, defining the study population, designing a study to collect and analyse the data, making appropriate conclusions based on the analysis results. We will focus on statistical aspects of each of these steps and discuss through examples possible issues that arise in various study designs, including the effects of confounding and the need for sample size and power calculations.
