Leadership update from Vivian Eliopoulos, President and CEO, VCH
As a world-class health organization, we are committed to creating a vibrant research and innovation culture focused on improving population health and advancing health care. To achieve this, we are building a learning health system to transform health care delivery as part of our vision of healthy lives in healthy communities.
Today, I am pleased to announce an important milestone on our journey to a learning health system – the appointment of Dr. Gavin Stuart as the Vice President Research, VCHRI, an important role that will foster a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge translation, and oversee the integration of research and care delivery that improves the health of our communities.
As the former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia (2003-2015) and Vice-Provost of Health, University of British Columbia (2009-2016), Dr. Stuart brings outstanding leadership experience to this position. As Dean, he led the expansion of the UBC Medical School and the implementation of UBC’s distributed model of health education, which now includes four provincial campuses. He also fostered development of outstanding health research across the province through relationships with Health Authority Research Institutes, including VCHRI, Genome BC, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and the Provincial Government.
After completing his terms as Dean and Vice-Provost, Dr. Stuart has remained a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UBC, and he is an active Medical Staff member at Vancouver Acute at VCH. His personal research has focused on gynecological cancer, and he has an extensive record of scholarly publications and presentations.
Dr. Stuart’s extensive experience and deep commitment to advancing health research, innovation and collaboration will be instrumental in further strengthening cooperation among VCH, UBC and other academic and health institutions, including Simon Fraser University and the B.C Ministry of Health.
Dr. Stuart will join our Senior Executive Team on May 26 and will work closely with senior leaders and medical directors to help ensure alignment in integrating research findings, clinical practice and knowledge translation in program delivery, patient safety and quality of care.
I would like to thank Dr. Patricia Daly for her ongoing partnership in overseeing the research portfolio at VCH. Our research programs will continue to evolve, reflecting our commitment to innovation that translates directly into improved health for our patients, clients and residents. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Stuart to VCHRI. We look forward to his leadership in advancing our research strategy, ensuring that VCH remains at the forefront of health-care innovation.
