Celebrating the life and distinguished career of Dr. Neil Reiner

Announcement Aug 15, 2025 1 minute

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Dr. Neil Reiner on August 7, 2025.

Dr. Neil Reiner was an exceptional leader in the field of infectious diseases. He served as director of Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute’s Immunity and Infection Research Centre and previously was head of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Reiner led a lifelong research program focused on understanding the strategies used by intracellular pathogens to prevent host macrophage activation. Over decades, his research produced several novel discoveries and continues to shed light on fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying Leishmania pathogenesis, with the goal of generating new approaches to advance drug and vaccine development. His laboratory remains active, reflecting his dedication to clinical and academic mentorship, which supported countless trainees in achieving success in their careers.

Dr. Reiner will be remembered by those who knew him for his keen intelligence, sharp wit and steadfast advice. He will be greatly missed by his family, colleagues, students and members of the VCH and UBC research community.
