Appointment of Dr. Teresa Tsang as Executive Lead and Scientific Director, VCHRI AI Hub

Announcement Mar 30, 2026 2 minutes

Leadership update from Dr. Stirling Bryan, VCHRI Interim Executive Director.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Teresa Tsang as Executive Lead and Scientific Director, VCHRI AI Hub, effective immediately through February 28, 2031.

Dr. Tsang is a professor of cardiology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She currently serves as director of echocardiography at Vancouver General Hospital and UBC Hospital, and as director of the UBC Artificial Intelligence Echo Core Lab.

A clinician-scientist, Dr. Tsang’s research focuses on leveraging large-scale health data and artificial intelligence to advance patient care and strengthen health system delivery. Her work has contributed to the prediction and prevention of adverse cardiovascular outcomes, including atrial fibrillation, heart failure, stroke and cognitive dysfunction. Her team has developed machine learning models for echocardiography, enabling automated and scalable assessment of cardiac structure and function.

As Executive Lead and Scientific Director, Dr. Tsang will provide strategic and scientific leadership to advance the VCHRI AI Hub’s mission to enable discovery, accelerate translation and deliver measurable health system and economic impact through responsible AI. Her mandate includes advancing sovereign AI infrastructure and secure data environments, enabling multidisciplinary research and increasing competitive funding and philanthropic support. She will work closely with clinical and operational leadership to integrate AI into care delivery and research, ensuring real-world impact for patients and communities.

Dr. Tsang will also strengthen strategic partnerships across industry, academia and government, support commercialization pathways where appropriate, and contribute to regional and national economic development through AI-enabled health innovation. Central to her role is the establishment of robust governance frameworks that uphold responsible AI principles, including fairness, transparency, equity and accountability, alongside meaningful engagement with patients and communities.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Tsang to this important leadership role.

Stirling Bryan, PhD, FCAHS
Interim Executive Director
Associate Dean, Research, UBC Faculty of Medicine
