Patient-Oriented Research: Why, What and How?

Jan 12 2022, 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Virtual
Intended Audience
Investigators, research staff and trainees

Join us for a panel discussion to learn about the meaning and importance of patient-oriented research. Learn how to get started in patient-oriented research and discover how patient engagement offers new and beneficial insights into health research.

This workshop is part of our VCHRI Research Training Series. This series is designed to support the acquisition of advanced skills, techniques and knowledge, and lead to enhanced practices in the conduct of research.

Learning objectives

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • What patient-oriented research is, why it is important and how you can implement it into your project
  • Different ways to engage a patient partner in your project
  • Things to consider when collaborating with a patient partner
  • How panelists are involved in patient-oriented research
About the speakers
Dr. Larry Mroz is the Research Services Lead and Patient Engagement Coordinator with the BC SUPPORT Unit, Vancouver office. In this role, he supports health researchers in their work with non-researchers, including patients, to help build their capacity to contribute to the research process. He has studied how people experience various health conditions and health behaviours, focusing on men’s health, diet and prostate cancer.
Dr. Lynne Feehan is a Physiotherapist and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at UBC whose research focuses on physical activity and bone health in people living with arthritis. Dr. Feehan is also the Knowledge Translation Lead at the BC SUPPORT Unit, where she supports health researchers to adopt a patient-oriented approach to their work. Her work focuses on bridging capacity for patient-oriented research to be accessible and used in health care, services and policy.
Kristi Coldwell is the Senior Advisor for Transplant Research Advocacy at the Transplant Research Foundation of BC. Having undergone a heart transplant as a teenager due to congenital heart disease, Kristi is acutely aware of the role research plays in improving outcomes and enhancing quality of life. She believes patient and family partners have an important role in research, ensuring it is meaningful and accountable to all stakeholders.
Dr. Lillian Hung is the founder and head of IDEA lab (Innovation in Dementia & Aging). Her research examines how technology and environment influences the care experiences of persons with dementia. She has expertise in patient-oriented research and knowledge translation. She is committed to facilitating connectivity between academia and practice, working collaboratively with inter-professional practitioners to find practical solutions to address pressing problems in care settings.
As a person living with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's, Dr. Jim Mann is an advocate as well as a co-researcher, co-lead and collaborator on various research projects. He is a mentor for early career researchers internationally and is an Advisory Council member of Research Ethics BC with a focus on consent and assumptions made of the (in)capability of participants with dementia in research.

Registrants will receive information on joining the virtual event two days prior to the event date.
