Biography
Dr. Miles Marchand is a cardiologist and director of the Centre for Indigenous Cardiovascular Health at the Dilawri Cardiovascular Institute. He is a member of the Okanagan Indian Band of the Syilx Okanagan Nation and Canada’s first First Nations cardiologist. Dr. Marchand completed his medical degree at the University of British Columbia (UBC), followed by residency training in internal medicine and cardiology at UBC, where he also served as chief resident for both programs. He subsequently completed advanced fellowship training in cardiac rehabilitation and prevention and a research fellowship in Indigenous cardiovascular health through the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. In addition, he has completed graduate studies in Indigenous public health at UBC.
Dr. Marchand’s research focuses on cardiovascular health inequities affecting Indigenous Peoples, including culturally safe models of cardiac rehabilitation, community-based cardiovascular care delivery and the integration of Indigenous and Western knowledge systems in cardiovascular care. In 2023, he received the Canadian Medical Association Award for Young Leaders in recognition of his contributions to advancing Indigenous cardiovascular health.
