$170 million annual funding places Vancouver Coastal Health and Providence Health Care among top five research hospitals in Canada.

Research Infosource Inc., a Canadian research, consulting and publishing firm, has released its annual ranking of Canada’s top 40 research hospitals. With $170 million in combined research funding for the 2023-2024 financial year, the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI) and Providence Research have once again ranked among the top hospital-based research institutes nationwide.

Research funding empowers VCHRI to attract top research talent from around world. VCHRI’s thriving community comprises over 2,400 members, including principal investigators, research staff and medical, graduate and post-graduate trainees, who share an unwavering commitment to enhancing health outcomes for people in British Columbia and beyond.

Home to 14 internationally renowned research centres and programs, VCHRI strives to push the boundaries of cutting-edge research, develop innovative technologies, shape life-changing health care policies and conduct groundbreaking clinical trials. Outside the realm of medicine, VCHRI’s research spurs economic growth for the province via job creation, spinoff company incubation and research and technology transfer, as well as through investments in training, recruitment and retention of future leaders.

“Research forms the cornerstone of advancing patient care and bolstering the resilience of our health system as we face evolving challenges," says Dr. Teresa Tsang, executive director of VCHRI. "Together, our shared commitment to innovation empowers us to drive transformative change, enhancing health outcomes for our communities.”

“VCHRI’s longstanding presence among Canada’s top research hospitals is a testament to our community’s tireless work in the pursuit of research excellence.”
