Purpose of Study
The purpose of this study is to understand the link between schizophrenia and heat. People with schizophrenia have died at disproportionately high rates in recent heat events. While there is some physiological and biomedical understanding of thermoregulation in people with schizophrenia, understandings of their social vulnerability is lacking. Through interviews with people with schizophrenia, as well as their caregivers and loved ones, the study team aims to get a fuller understanding of their experiences in extreme heat events.
Eligibility
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:
- have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, and experienced the 2021 B.C. heat dome or another extreme heat event in B.C. since 2010 in the community setting (i.e. not in supervised clinical settings); or
- are the loved one or caregiver of someone diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who experienced the 2021 B.C. heat dome or other extreme heat events in B.C. since 2010 in the community setting (i.e. not in supervised clinical settings)
