Meet Jaashing — Supporting professional development for the VCHRI research community.
Q: What is your role in health research?
A: I am the research education coordinator at VCHRI. In my role, I oversee all of the research education programs by facilitating activities and operations to offer education opportunities for VCHRI researchers. I also provide support with award and funding opportunities such as the Knowledge Translation Challenge and Research Challenge.
Q: What is the best part about your research job?
A: Through coordinating the monthly Research Training Series, I have the opportunity to work with experts in different fields and learn from a variety of professionals that I may not otherwise have the chance to meet. On top of that, seeing the months of planning leading up to an event or workshop result in success is very fulfilling.
Q: What is your research area of interest?
A: I am interested in rehabilitation and knowledge translation. Through my experience working on the Spinal Cord Injury Research Evidence (SCIRE) Project for SCIRE Community, I have learned that making research accessible and understandable to those living with spinal cord injury is crucial to help improve their quality of life.
Q: How do you unwind at the end of the day?
A: I love watching the sunset, either with friends or on my own. In the warmer months, I enjoy relaxing on the beach watching the sky change colours as the sun goes down.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
A: I have not seen my family in China since before the COVID-19 pandemic, so I would love to visit again soon. I also want to explore Japan and South Korea and try all the delicious food!
Q: What is your favourite TV show?
A: I love watching Korean dramas, my favourite of which is Goblin. It has a very interesting concept and some scenes were filmed in Montreal. If you don’t mind reading subtitles, I would definitely recommend giving it a watch.
Q: Who motivates and inspires you?
A: Being able to work alongside fellow students from all academic backgrounds is deeply empowering as we get to challenge each other, celebrate our achievements and reach our goals together. I can see the impact that we, as the next generation, will have on the world and it motivates me to keep going.
