Purpose of Study
The purpose of this study is to examine spontaneous (i.e., not cued, or externally triggered) craving in e-cigarette users. The study team will present participants with craving probes while they watch a conventional film. The goal is to examine the ability of this method to capture craving so it can be applied to brain imaging research (fMRI). If eligible, participants may also have the opportunity to participate in the fMRI portion for additional compensation — interest in this portion can be indicated in the e-screening form.
Each participant will attend two sessions at UBC. The first session will last one hour and will involve screening and introduction, including questionnaires. The second session will last 1.5 hours and will involve watching a film while answering questions about craving, as well as participating in a recorded interview to get feedback on task. The study team will verify vaping status during session one (do not need to abstain). Prior to session two, participants must abstain from any nicotine use overnight. Saliva cotinine tests will be administered.
Eligibility
This study is open to healthy adults between 20-35 years of age who vape nicotine. Eligible participants must be willing to abstain from any nicotine use overnight prior to the second session. To confirm full eligibility, the research team will review responses to a screening survey and may follow up with a phone call.
If interested, please fill out the online screening form via REDCap here.
