Purpose of Study
The purpose of this study is to test a new wearable device developed by the study team to track muscle health and performance during exercise and recovery. This tool will support elite Canadian athletes and their teams in improving training. During cycling and running workouts, sensors will collect data like heart rate, muscle activity and breathing. Using artificial intelligence (AI), researchers will analyze this data to find patterns and predict when muscles start to tire. These insights can help optimize athletic performance and recovery plans.
Before joining the study, individuals will complete an online screening and consent process. If eligible, participants will fill out a survey and undergo measurements like skinfold thickness, heart rate, oxygen levels and breathing. Two exercise sessions — cycling and running — will follow, during which sensors will monitor muscle oxygen, heart rate and breathing. Blood samples will be collected to track lactate levels at four time points. These procedures help researchers understand how the body responds to and recovers from exercise.
Eligibility
This study is open to healthy individuals between 18 and 39 years of age who can provide informed consent in English. Individuals may not qualify if they have a history of muscle, heart or lung conditions; have recent injuries; have uncontrolled health issues; have a limited life expectancy; have a history of smoking or substance use; are pregnant or breastfeeding; or are unable to follow study requirements.
