Purpose of Study

The purpose of this study is to investigate Brain Health PRO. Brain Health PRO is an educational program designed to teach participants about dementia risk factors. It will provide best available evidence for lifestyle changes that may help lower dementia risk, including exercise, nutrition, sleep, and social and psychological health. The program is being tested as part of a research study.

Interested participants will be directed to a pre-screening form to determine potential eligibility. From there, the study team will reach out to confirm eligibility and share more details on the next steps.

Eligible participants will participate in the educational program, Brain Health PRO. Some participants in this study will be assigned to the Brain Health PRO intervention right away and others will be assigned to it in six months, but all participants will be able to access the Brain Health PRO intervention during the study.

Participation will last up to 24 months. During the six-month intervention period, approximately 40 minutes per week is required to view content on Brain Health PRO. There are brief questionnaires every three to six months and a cognitive test every six months. Participants will also be asked to evaluate the program.

Eligibility

This study is open to participants who are 50-80 years of age, have sufficient understanding of English or French to take part in the program, and have adequate vision to complete online cognitive testing.

Participants must have:

  • Regular access to a computer or tablet with an internet connection;
  • Access to a desktop or laptop computer with an internet connection at least once every six months;
  • The ability to send and receive emails; and
  • The ability to complete online assessments.

Participants must also be at increased risk of dementia due to at least one of the following:

  • A first-degree family history of dementia; OR
  • An education level at or below high school (Grade 12 or less); OR
  • Any of the following conditions: hypertension (high blood pressure), hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol), high body mass index (BMI), or a physically inactive lifestyle.
