Celebrating a year of research progress and unity

Stories Dec 1, 2023 3 minutes

A special message from the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute Leadership Team.

As we bid farewell to 2023, we stand on the precipice of a new opportunity to push boundaries and continue to strive towards health research excellence, resilience, innovation and unity. This year, the research community at Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI) continued to navigate an evolving health care landscape in British Columbia, facing unique challenges as well as celebrating triumphs.

2023 has been a year of remarkable progress. Our researchers, clinician-scientists, trainees and support teams have continued to push boundaries, address pressing health issues and pioneer innovative solutions.

This May, VCHRI celebrated our 20th anniversary as a leading health research institute dedicated to improving the lives of patients and the delivery of care. Amidst the global pandemic, the resilience of the VCHRI community shines through as we tackle challenges in the health sector, addressing issues posed by the aging population. Our researchers are drawing from big data to propel advancements in cardiac care, while also pioneering virtual reality and wearable technologies to enhance the quality of life of people in long-term care settings.

We think outside the box, finding novel solutions to make safe and effective care accessible from the comfort of patients’ homes through initiatives such as home test kits, monitoring devices and virtual check-ins with health professionals. Engaging with community members and patient partners, our research teams actively break down barriers to optimal care, particularly among populations experiencing preventable health inequities, including Indigenous communities. Furthermore, our researchers serve as community leaders, fostering the empowerment of women scientists and encouraging underrepresented individuals to pursue careers in health research.

“Health research profoundly influences individuals' well-being, patient care and overall quality of life. The relentless dedication of our researchers and teams at VCHRI exemplifies the power of innovation and resilience in driving advancements and breaking barriers for optimal care,” says Dr. Patricia Daly, Vice President, Public Health and Chief Medical Health Officer at Vancouver Coastal Health.

Looking ahead, we are poised for even greater achievements in 2024. We are determined to develop initiatives aimed at fostering collaboration across diverse research disciplines. These initiatives will encourage creative thinking, spark new partnerships and unlock the full potential of our research community.

In the spirit of unity and innovation, we recognize that every member of the VCHRI family plays a vital role. Whether you are a researcher, a support staff member, a collaborator or a community partner, your dedication is the driving force behind our progress.

This holiday season, as we celebrate the successes of 2023, we encourage you to embrace the spirit of exploration and discovery. Let’s cherish the opportunity to make a positive impact on health care and society, setting the stage for a year filled with groundbreaking advancements and shared achievements.

May this holiday season be a time of rest, inspiration and connection with loved ones, as we recharge our spirits for the exciting journey that awaits in 2024.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to advancing health research. Together, we will continue to drive innovation and make a lasting difference in the world. Wishing you a joyous and peaceful holiday season and a prosperous New Year.
