Meet Gavin — A research scientist dedicated to optimizing the health care system, one technology assessment at a time.

Q: What is your role in health research?
A:
I am a research scientist at the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) unit within the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluation (C2E2). Our team conducts research to help policymakers make informed decisions about funding new technologies for our health care system. My primary role is to systematically review the clinical effectiveness of these technologies. I also support clinical departments in developing and implementing their own review projects.

Q: What is your research area of interest, and what led you to that interest?
A:
I believe HTA is where the rubber meets the road in medicine. My desire to optimize the B.C. health care system led me to join C2E2, where I can contribute to the evaluation and implementation of new technologies for the province.

Q: What is the best part of your research job?
A:
In my role, I encounter a lot of cutting-edge technology proposed for implementation. It is exciting to have a front-row seat to witness how these innovations can potentially change people's lives in B.C. and across Canada. It is also rewarding to know that my work has influenced health policy and improved patient outcomes.

Q: What is one of the biggest accomplishments of your career so far?
A:
I was involved in a project that assessed the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of deep brain stimulation (DBS) compared to medication for treating Parkinson’s disease. Our analysis found that DBS was the most cost-effective option with the best clinical outcomes, which led to a policy change in the province. This has had lasting benefits for both patients and health care organizations.

Q: What would you do if you were not in health research?
A:
When I was young, I often dreamt of being a river cruise captain or train driver. I have always enjoyed scenic travel, so working in a job where the landscape is constantly changing would be fascinating. Meeting fellow travellers is a nice bonus, too.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
A:
Given my love for scenic travel, I would love to take a river cruise on the Danube River or ride a train through the Rocky Mountains. Traveling this way allows you to sit back, relax and enjoy the views from a unique perspective. It is like taking your hotel with you from town to town.

Q: What is your healthiest habit?
A:
Prioritizing good quality sleep keeps my mind sharp. I go to bed at the same time each night and avoid electronic screens for at least an hour beforehand, which helps me unwind. It was not easy at first, but I have learnt to replace screen time with reading.

Q: What is your favourite TV show?
A:
I love The Big Bang Theory. It is a hilarious show that exemplifies how much fun science can be!

Gavin Wong graduated from the Ohio State University with a degree in respiratory therapy and moved to Vancouver to complete a PhD in pharmacology at UBC in 2014. He has authored numerous HTA reports that have helped shape health policy in Canada, as well as several published Cochrane systematic reviews. He has served as an editor for the Cochrane hypertension group. Since joining C2E2 in 2016, Gavin has been actively involved in evaluating non-drug medical devices.
