The Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI), in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, is launching the Phase 1 Clinical Trials Research Unit (P1-CTRU) — a purpose-built facility that integrates early-phase clinical research directly into patient care.
Located at UBC Hospital and connected to Canada’s Immuno-Engineering and Biomanufacturing Hub (CIEBH), P1-CTRU accelerates the safe evaluation of novel therapies — including drugs, biologics and medical devices — across neurological diseases (ALS, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Multiple Sclerosis, dementia), mobility disorders, oncology, hematology, immunotherapy and other areas of significant unmet clinical need. By integrating research within the hospital environment, the unit shortens the path from discovery to treatment while keeping patient safety at the forefront.

Medical Manager, Phase 1 Clinical Trials Research Unit, UBC Hospital
VCH is seeking expressions of interest from medical leaders to provide strategic oversight and clinical leadership for Phase 1 clinical trials within a leading academic health research environment. The Medical Manager will play a central role in ensuring the safe, ethical and high-quality delivery of clinical services, with responsibility for investigational product administration, participant safety and overall trial conduct.
The successful candidate will hold a medical degree, be eligible for licensure in British Columbia, and be a member of either the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of recent medical leadership experience, including at least three years in clinical research, as well as demonstrated expertise in Phase 1 clinical trial operations.
