Meet Jocelyn — A biotechnology-focused research coordinator with a knack for lab management.

Q: What is your role in health research?
A:
As the research coordinator of the Implantable Biosensing Laboratory (IBL) at ICORD, I manage the administrative side of the lab. This includes tasks like writing ethics and grant applications, reviewing publications and overseeing the lab's daily operations. I also order supplies, onboard students and reconcile finances. One of my favorite aspects of my job is participating in studies and helping to determine the best protocols for each project.

Q: What is your research area of interest, and what led you to that interest?
A:
At IBL, we explore advanced biosensing techniques, focusing on designing, developing and evaluating novel implantable biosensors for clinical applications. In my previous role as a lab technician, I realized that my strengths and interests were better suited to the administrative side of clinical research. This discovery prompted me to shift my focus from bench work to organization and management within the health research field.

Q: What would you do if you had not pursued a career in research?
A:
I probably would have become a teacher. I enjoy mentoring and guiding new students in the lab and find great satisfaction in helping others learn and grow.

Q: Who inspires you?
A:
My parents have been a significant source of inspiration throughout my academic and professional journey. Their experiences with disabilities and diseases inspired me to pursue a career in biological sciences, shaping my master's thesis and driving my current role at IBL. I am motivated by the idea of making a positive impact for people with similar conditions.

Q: How do you unwind at the end of the day?
A:
I find peace in spending time in my garden. The simple tasks of weeding and maintaining the grass allow me to unwind, relax and reflect on the day.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
A:
I would choose the Galapagos Islands. The natural beauty and incredible wildlife there are unmatched, with many species that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth.

Jocelyn loves to travel. She recently checked Iceland off her bucket list, spending two weeks exploring fascinating landscapes across the country, including the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

Q: What is your healthiest habit?
A:
I regularly practice yoga at a local studio. The combination of infrared heat and movement helps me stay fit and reduces stress. Plus, the energetic music and the fantastic group of classmates and instructors make it a lot of fun!

Q: What piece of advice would you give your younger self?
A:
Cherish the time and memories you make with loved ones. They are the most important things in life and should never be taken for granted.

Originally from Guelph, Ontario, Jocelyn Bégin moved to Vancouver in 2019 to pursue a Master of Science in cell and developmental biology at the University of British Columbia. Under the supervision of Dr. Brad Hoffman, her thesis explored metabolic and epigenetic changes in Type 1 and 2 diabetes. After completing her degree, she worked as a lab technician and manager in Dr. Mahmoud Pouladi’s lab, focusing on rare neurodegenerative diseases. In her current role as the research coordinator of IBL, Jocelyn supports the administrative and operational aspects of multiple clinical research projects under the guidance of Dr. Babak Shadgan.
