Treating depression with accelerated brain stimulation

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of intermittent theta burst (iTBS) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in improving depression symptoms over an accelerated treatment course of eight treatments per day for five days.

Supporting mental health through phone texting

The purpose of this study is to assess whether a phone texting service will improve quality of care provided to the patients discharged from the Joseph & Rosalie Segal Family Health Centre at Vancouver General Hospital. Providing additional support, via their mobile phones, and connection to a care navigator, especially after discharge from psychiatric inpatient units may help patients make a seamless transition from hospital to community-based care and can potentially reduce losses to follow-up and unplanned readmissions to hospital.

Neurocardiac predictors of treatment response to rTMS in depression

The purpose of this study is to explore whether heart rate variability (HRV) normalization may serve as a surrogate marker of the changes in brain function caused by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) that are associated with symptomatic improvement in depression.

A web-based peer navigation program for men with prostate cancer

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of a peer navigation program for men with prostate and a peer navigator training course called the True North Peer Navigation program. The study will evaluate patient outcomes such as their ability to take a more active role in their health, quality of life, social support and use of health care services, in addition to the experiences of patients and peer navigators and the factors that make it easier or harder for people to deliver the program to patients in different settings.

Collecting data on race and ethnicity

The purpose of this study is to understand how race/ethnicity data is collected alongside other sociodemographic data and to gain perspectives on how collecting race/ethnicity data can be used to inform culturally safe mental health care services and supports for diverse patient groups.

fMRI and Response Inhibition in Individuals with Bipolar Disorder

The purpose of this study is to look at the link between regions of brain activity and impulsivity and to look at a non-invasive intervention called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to help reduce the risk of impulsive behaviours.

Brain Health and Exercise in Schizophrenia (PEHP)

To determine the effects of aerobic exercise on hippocampal volumes and severity of psychotic symptoms in a population of psychosis patients compared to healthy age/gender matched volunteers. Psychosis patients often suffer from a number of cognitive difficulties, including poor memory function, poor problem-solving capacity and difficulties with attention and concentration. These problems are not well addressed by current clinical treatments.

Contrasting Group Therapy Methods for Psychosis (MCT)

Current Canadian Clinical Practice guidelines emphasize the need for effective psychosocial adjuncts to pharmacotherapy for schizophrenia (Canadian Psychiatric Association 2005). This randomized control trial seeks to contribute to the body of evidence supporting psychosocial treatments by assessing the effectiveness of metacognitive training (MCT) and cognitive remediation (CR) at treating the persistent positive and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia.

Low-dose vs. Normal-dose Psychostimulants on Executive Functions in Children With ADHD

This double-blind crossover study aims to compare cognitive performance (e.g., working memory, selective attention and cognitive flexibility) of children ages 6-18 years diagnosed with ADHD of the combined type (ADHD-C) or inattentive-type (ADHD-IA) and currently on > 20 mg/day of psychostimulants (psychostimulants) on: a) their current dose of psychostimulants, vs. b) a lower-dose of psychostimulants (half of their current dose).

Study of the Effect of Dosing on Clozapine Levels (PK-CLZ)

The objectives of this 15-day study are:

  • To compare steady-state trough plasma concentrations of clozapine and its metabolite norclozapine when given once daily and twice daily (at the same total daily dose)
  • To determine if frequency of clozapine administration has an effect on:
    • Symptoms of schizophrenia
    • Adverse effects of clozapine
    • Fasting blood glucose, lipids, creatinine, and urea
    • Weight and waist circumference
