MyndMove

Many individuals with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) have difficulty using their hands and arms. MyndMove is a non-invasive medical device that uses short, low energy electrical pulses with surface electrodes to cause muscle contractions to produce a full range of reaching and grasping movements, which the patient is unable to perform by him/herself.

By using MyndMove therapy to help the individual move their arms and hands as he/she attempts to carry out typical reaching and grasping movements, the individual improves their ability to perform these tasks voluntarily.

PULSE (Partners Using Linked Strategies Effectively) Study

Health behaviors like physical activity and nutritious eating habits significantly reduce initial stroke risk and help prevent strokes from reoccurring. Yet, most individuals struggle to meet physical activity and nutrition recommendations. Health and health behaviors are typically linked in couples, and spouses occupy a unique position to facilitate each other’s physical activity and healthy nutrition, thereby reducing stroke risk for everyone involved.

Investigating the impact of an activity chair on daily living

The purpose of this study is to understand how an activity chair affects daily living among adults with chronic conditions resulting in pain, fatigue or low standing endurance. In particular, researchers are interested to learn participants’ experience using the activity chair in their own homes and whether the activity chair affects day-to-day engagement in activities that are meaningful to them.

Motor Learning-based Wheelchair Propulsion Training for Older Adults

Many older adults lack the skill of efficient wheelchair propulsion despite being the largest cohort of wheelchair users. Inefficient wheelchair propulsion can lead to fatigue and overuse injuries that can result in lost independent mobility. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of a new training strategy using a motor learning based approach to train efficient wheelchair propulsion. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: 1) No practice; 2) Motor learning-based training; or 3) Practice (time-matched to training).

WheelSeeU Feasibility Study

Self-efficacy predicts behavioural and rehabilitation outcomes and may be an important psychological factor for wheelchair mobility. A feasibility study will evaluate a novel self-efficacy enhanced wheelchair training intervention for older adults (WheelSeeU) to determine if: 1.WheelSeeU is feasible to administer; 2. WheelSeeU improves wheelchair use, confidence for wheelchair use, wheelchair mobility, and satisfaction with participation in older adults compared to group-based information sessions; and 3. the study design is appropriate.
